Rock Drawing by Kai Kozan

Kyoto Women’s University Library Collection

“A rock garden with stones of various sizes and shapes. What flows between the rocks is not the geometric ripples that are unique to dry landscape gardens, but the character for ‘settling water’, which accumulates and flows on the ground after rain, and drawn to disappear, creating a picture full of tranquility.

The poem added as a tribute was a poem by Wariko that responded to the painting.

There are some things, but
The water flows like a breeze.

- Wariko

Life and the state of the heart are often likened to water. As we move forward, we may trip over obsticles like stones or tree roots, but if we let ourselves go with the flow like water, we will not be distracted by small things… This poem expresses the calm state of mind that Wariko has reaches as she has aged.”

Translated from ‘The Silent Southern painter, Kai Kozan - A solitary life and art’ by Shinya Maesaki and Takasi Murata
